C5H4N4O3 a nitrogen-containing waste
substance, formed from the breakdown of food
and body protein. It is the usual excretory
material in insects, reptiles, and birds.
Humans and other primates produce some uric
acid as well as urea, the normal
nitrogen-waste product of mammals, adult
amphibians, and many marine fishes. If formed
in excess and not excreted, uric acid may be
deposited in sharp crystals in the joints and
other tissues, causing gout; or it may form
stones (calculi) in the kidneys or bladder.
